“August 2019 will be forever etched into our memory. That was the summer Emily was diagnosed with brain cancer and the beginning of her journey. After being medically evacuated to Winnipeg, a flurry of tests of all kinds happened in a very short time. Two days later, Emily had brain surgery to place a shunt to relieve the pressure due to hydrocephalus and to do a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of panhypopituitarism secondary to suprasellar germinoma.
Emily has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy and eighteen radiation treatments. We had to leave our home in The Pas and stayed in Winnipeg for treatment for nearly five months. Fortunately, the treatments eradicated the tumor, but they also left a number of cognitive and visual impairments, as well as overall health issues—complications that will be part of her daily life from now on.
We are thankful for all the people who had a hand in Emily’s journey and continue to help in some way to this day.
That hasn’t stopped Emily from doing the things she loves and continuing to dream big. She wants to become a teacher and will start her journey here at home this fall at UCN, taking her Bachelor of Arts with hopes of continuing her Education degree at Brandon University.”
Emily, your strength and perseverance through life’s hardest moments are truly inspiring. We know your journey hasn’t been easy, but here you are. Moving forward with hope, courage, and determination. We are so proud to celebrate this milestone with you and wish you nothing but the best as you begin this next chapter. ❤️🎗️
